Pangolins are rare creatures that are trafficked for their meat and scales. The word ‘pangolin’ is derived from the Malay word ‘pengguling’ which means ‘one who rolls up’. They curl up into a tight ball exposing hard scales, while protecting their face and underbelly.

Their tail plays a crucial role in this. This mammal with the largest number of vertebrae is the only one covered with scales. Unfortunately, due to the high illegal demand for scales, they are now one of the most endangered species on the planet. They use their tail not only for protection but also to grip tree branches and to carry their young.
