In a renewed concern over the persisting issue of illegal sand mining, locals have expressed their discontent over unauthorized sand mining activities in the Tiracol river in Pernem Taluka. On Tuesday, villagers voiced their objections and issued a warning, insisting that sand mining in the Tiracol river should be legalised before considering importing sand from neighbouring Maharashtra. Failure to address this concern promptly, locals warned, may lead to intensified agitation. Tukaram Harmalkar, a prominent voice among the protestors, called upon both Pernem and Mandrem MLAs to address the issue urgently. He stressed the importance of initiating procedures for legal sand mining within the region before contemplating importing sand from Maharashtra.
