Two days after Suchana Seth, a Bengaluru-based CEO of a tech start-up, was arrested for allegedly killing her four-year-old son in a hotel, investigators said they are examining the possibility of the accused administering a “heavy dosage” of cough syrup to her son before allegedly “smothering” him. Police sources said two empty bottles of cough syrup were recovered from the service apartment at Candolim. Suchana had checked into the resort apartment on January 6. According to the police, she was caught from Karnataka’s Chitradurga district while allegedly trying to flee in a cab with her son’s body stuffed in a bag. “Two bottles – one small and one large – of cough syrup have been recovered from the service apartment. She had carried one bottle of cough syrup in her luggage. While staying at the hotel, she requested the receptionist to get another bottle of cough syrup, claiming she had a sore throat,” said a police officer familiar with the investigation. On Tuesday, Dr Kumar Naik, a government doctor who conducted the post-mortem, had said, “The child was killed more than 36 hours earlier. He has been smothered or strangulated. There are no wounds or signs of struggle. There may be the use of a pillow or a wire.” Alluding to this, the Goa police officer said: “The autopsy mentioned that there were no signs of struggle. We are probing if the child was given a heavy dosage of cough syrup to sedate him. The hotel staff has confirmed that she had asked them for one bottle of cough syrup.” Police said Seth has so far maintained she did not kill her son. “She claimed her son was asleep and she did not know how he died,” said a police officer.
