Do ghosts exist? For students at a government school, they did—in the Class 5 room at the far corner of their school. This changed when a teacher dispelled their fear by spending the night in the supposedly haunted room and coming out unscathed the next morning. The myth began to unravel when Nuthal Ravindar joined the Mandal Parishad Upper Primary School in Anandpur, Jainad Mandal of Adilabad district in Telangana, last week. While teaching Class 7, a tree fell outside, causing the students to tremble with fear. Curious, Ravindar asked the nine students in his classroom about their reaction, and they disclosed their belief in a ghost haunting Class 5. Despite his attempts to reassure them, the students remained firm, describing the strange noises they often heard from the empty classroom. Who else but a ghost could make such sounds, they argued. Ghost Deal: Students Insisted on Amavasya Determined to prove them wrong, Ravindar, a rationalist and general secretary of Jana Vignana Vedika, offered to sleep in the Class 5 room. The students, however, insisted he do so on July 5, the night of Amavasya. Ravindar agreed, on one condition: the arrangement had to remain a secret between him and the students. Neither the outside world nor the supposed ghost should know. On the appointed night, Ravindar arrived at the school with a bedsheet and a torch. Watched by the students, he entered Class 5 at 8 PM. The night passed without incident, and the next morning, the students eagerly gathered outside the classroom at 6 AM.
