Several people died after a huge fire broke out in the 24-storey Grenfell Tower in West London. Thick smoke could be seen for miles around, while witnesses reported people jumping from open windows after being trapped by the advancing flames.

First reports of fire in the tower, came in at 00:54 BST (05:25 AM IST).

The fire department issued a statement saying the fire had spread from the second floor to the top floor of the building.

According to the London ambulance service, close to 50 people have been hospitalised. At least 200 firefighters and 40 engines were at the scene trying to control the situation.

The area around Grenfell Tower has been cordoned off and approximately 30 adjacent flats have been evacuated by police.

Eyewitnesses saw trapped residents flashing mobile phones and torch lights from their windows, some holding children from windows.

The incident has raised safety concerns about buildings located in the wealthy neighbourhood in London.
