കൊതുകിൽ നിന്ന് ലോകത്തെ രക്ഷിക്കാൻ ഗൂഗിളിന്റെ ആദ്യ ദൗത്യം വിജയിച്ചു
ലോകമെമ്പാടും പത്തു ലക്ഷത്തിലേറെ പേരാണ് ഓരോ വർഷവും കൊതുകുജന്യ രോഗങ്ങളാൽ കൊല്ലപ്പെടുന്നത്. കോടിക്കണക്കിന് പേർക്ക് രോഗങ്ങളും വരുന്നു. ഡെങ്കി, ചിക്കുൻഗുനിയ, മലേറിയ, മഞ്ഞപ്പനി എല്ലാം കൊടുകകുകൾ പരത്തുന്നതാണ്. ‘സിക്ക’ ഉൾപ്പടെയുള്ള മാരകരോഗങ്ങൾക്കെല്ലാം കാരണം പെൺകൊതുകുകളാണ്, പ്രത്യേകിച്ച് ഈഡിസ് ഈജിപ്തി കൊതുകുകൾ. വിവിധ രാജ്യങ്ങളിലായി പ്രതിരോധ പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾ നടത്തിയിട്ടും ഇതുവരെ കൊതുകിനെ വരുതിയിലാക്കാൻ ആർക്കും സാധിച്ചിട്ടുമില്ല. ഈ സാഹചര്യത്തിലാണ് ശാസ്ത്രത്തിന്റെ കൈപിടിച്ച് സഹായവുമായി ഗൂഗിൾ എത്തിയത്.
2017 ൽ ഗൂഗിൾ തുടക്കമിട്ട കൊതുകിനെ തുരത്താനുള്ള പദ്ധതി 95 ശതമാനം വരെ വിജയിച്ചെന്നാണ് അറിയുന്നത്.
ഗൂഗിൾ സെർച്ച് എൻജിൻ ഭീമന്റെ മാതൃകമ്പനിയായ ആൽഫബെറ്റിനു കീഴിലെ ലൈഫ് സയൻസസ് വിഭാഗമായ ‘വെരിലി’ ആണ് പുതിയ പ്രോജക്ട് പരീക്ഷിച്ചത്. ഇവിടത്തെ ഗവേഷകർ 2017 ൽ കലിഫോർണിയയിലെ ഫ്രെസ്നോ നഗരത്തിലും പരിസരത്തും തുറന്നുവിട്ടത് 15 ലക്ഷത്തിലേറെ കൊതുകുകളെയായിരുന്നു. പക്ഷേ അവയൊന്നും ഉപദ്രവകാരികളായിരുന്നില്ല. മനുഷ്യനെ കടിക്കാത്ത ആൺകൊതുകുകളെയാണ് അവർ തുറന്നുവിട്ടത്. അവയ്ക്ക് മറ്റൊരു പ്രത്യേകത കൂടിയുണ്ട്. തുറന്നുവിട്ട ലക്ഷക്കണക്കിനു കൊതുകുകളിലും വൊൽബാക്കിയ എന്ന ബാക്ടീരിയത്തെ കയറ്റിവിട്ടിരുന്നു. ഈ ബാക്ടീരിയയുള്ള ആൺകൊതുകുകളുമായി പെൺകൊതുകുകൾ ഇണചേരുമെങ്കിലും അതുവഴിയുണ്ടാകുന്ന മുട്ടകൾ വിരിയില്ല!
കൊതുകിന്റെ ശരീരത്തിൽ ഒളിച്ചിരുന്ന് മുട്ടകളെ വിരിയാൻ പറ്റാത്ത അവസ്ഥയിലാക്കുന്നവയാണ് ഇത്തരം ബാക്ടീരിയങ്ങൾ ചെയ്യുക.
മനുഷ്യനെ കടിക്കാത്തതിനാൽ ആ ഭീതി വേണ്ട. അഥവാ കടിച്ചാൽത്തന്നെ വൊൽബാക്കിയ മനുഷ്യനെ യാതൊരു തരത്തിലും ബാധിക്കില്ല. മോസ്കിറ്റ്മേറ്റ് എന്ന ബയോടെക് കമ്പനിയുമായി ചേർന്നാണ് വെരിലിയുടെ ഈ ‘ഡീബഗ് പ്രോജക്ട്’ പരീക്ഷിച്ചത്. ഒരു റോബട്ടിക് സംവിധാനത്തിലൂടെയാണ് ഇത്രയേറെ കൊതുകുകളെ ഉൽപാദിപ്പിച്ചെടുത്തത്. ഇത്തരത്തിൽ വൻകൂട്ടമായി കൊതുകുകളെ തുറന്നുവിടുന്നതിനെ ഒരു ‘ജൈവയുദ്ധ’ത്തോടാണ് ഗവേഷകർ ഉപമിക്കുന്നത്. ചില കൊതുകുകളെയും ഷഡ്പദങ്ങളെയും പ്രസവിക്കാൻ സാധിക്കാത്ത വിധമാക്കുന്നതിൽ വൊൽബാക്കിയ നിർണായക പങ്കു വഹിക്കുന്നുണ്ടെന്ന് 1967ൽ തന്നെ ഗവേഷകർ മനസ്സിലാക്കിയിരുന്നു.
ഈ തന്ത്രം ഉപയോഗപ്പെടുത്തിയാണ് കൊതുകുകളെ ഇല്ലാതാക്കാനുമുള്

The Ponda Municipal Council (PMC) on Thursday decided to initiate action against owners of the abandoned vehicles.
