Louisville's Kevin Ware suffers gruesome leg injury

Kevin Ware's teammates couldn't bear to watch after he went down in a heap after landing awkwardly on his leg.
Russ Smith was crying on the opposite side of the court. Peyton Siva bent over. Chane Behanan did the same, sobbing. Louisville coach Rick Pitino even shed tears after watching the Cardinals sophomore's gruesome leg injury with 6:33 remaining in the first half of the Elite Eight contest against Duke.

'It was as bad as I've ever seen,' said Richard Pitino, Rick's son and Florida International head coach, who was sitting just a few feet away from where the injury occurred. 'I've never seen a bone come out of a shin like that.'
Ware appeared to land awkwardly while contesting Tyler Thornton's shot in front of Louisville's bench. After writhing in pain for several minutes, he was taken off the court on a stretcher while the entire crowd cheered -- including Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski and Blue Devils players.

Richard Pitino recruited Ware when he was an assistant with his father.

'He's a great kid,' he said. 'He had a tough season, but was playing well and starting to flourish. I'm just hoping he can recover.'

It was reminiscent of injuries to former NFL quarterback Joe Theismann's knee injury back in the 1980s or when South Carolina running back Marcus Lattimore suffered a brutal knee injury in 2012.

An enthusiastic gallery of basketball fans at Lucas Oil Stadium were hushed quickly Sunday afternoon at Lucas Oil Stadium.

With 6:33 to go in the first half of the Midwest Regional Final game between Louisville and Duke, the Cardinals' Kevin Ware suffered a compound fracture of his right leg as he was going for a blocked shot.

The injury occurred right in front of the Louisville bench and his teammates reacted in shock to the gruesome injury. Players for the Cardinals and the Blue Devils were visibly shaken by the injury as a few collapsed to the floor while others began to cry.

Immediately athletic trainers came to the aid of Ware, who was on his back with the injured leg in the air.

With the crowd of over 34,657 silent, Ware was worked on for over ten minutes before he was carried off the floor on a stretch. Ware went from Lucas Oil Stadium to Methodist Hospital for further treatment.

Moments following the injury concern was expressed by many throughout twitter with the hashtag 'PrayForWare' began trending minutes after the injury. Joe Theismann, a former NFL quarterback whose career ended on a compound leg fracture in 1985, tweeted: 'Watching Duke/ Louisville my heart goes out to Kevin Ware.'

Louisville's Kevin Ware Has Surgery After Gruesome Injury During NCAA Tournament

University of Louisville basketball player Kevin Ware suffered an open fracture of his right leg during Sunday’s Midwest Regional final that left his teammates and coach in tears.
Ware, a 6-foot-2 sophomore guard, was contesting an outside shot right in front of his own team’s bench when he landed awkwardly and his leg buckled, bending almost at a right angle.
Ware, 20, was taken to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis after the game to repair the fracture. School officials said the leg, broken in two places, was reset and a rod inserted into his right tibia. ESPN reported Ware will remain in Indianapolis until at least Tuesday.
Louisville head coach Rick Pitino said Ware immediately though about his team the moments after sustaining the injury. Ware told the team that he would be fine and to win the game, according to Pitino.
“The bone’s 6 inches out of his leg and all he’s yelling is, ‘Win the game, win the game,’” Pitino said after the game. “I’ve not seen that in my life. … Pretty special young man.”
Pitino said Ware will need a year to recover from the injury before returning to basketball.
Louisville drew inspiration from Ware’s message and rolled over Duke, 85-63, in the Midwest Regional at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. The Cardinals will play Wichita State in the Final Four next Saturday.
The injury was so gruesome that CBS decided to halt replays of the injury after showing it two times.
