A Carnival cruise ship was evacuated on Wednesday after explosions on two nearby barges lit up the Alabama sky and left three people critically injured.
About 800 crew members were made to evacuate the Carnival Triumph after two nearby barges exploded, leaving unsafe conditions for nearby vessels.
The explosions that forced the evacuation happened on two fuel barges in Mobile, Alabama. The fire, which appeared to be accidental, left three people with severe burns.
Firefighters were called shortly after 8:30 pm on Wednesday for the explosions, which took place on the Mobile River east of downtown. The initial blast happened in a channel near the George C. Wallace Tunnel, which carries traffic from Interstate 10 under the Mobile River, but the tunnel was able to remain open.
'It literally sounded like bombs going off around. The sky just lit up in orange and red,' a witness to the explosion said. 'We could smell something in the air, we didn't know if it was gas or smoke.' Waugh said he could feel the heat from the explosion and when he came back inside, his partner noticed he had what appeared to be black soot on his face.
The U.S. Coast Guard said the explosions are still under investigation.
'Once (the fire) is out and safe, a full investigation will take place,' a spokesman said.

A massive explosion at 3a.m. EDT on one of the two barges still ablaze in the Mobile River in Mobile, Ala., on Thursday, April 25, 2013.
A Carnival cruise ship was evacuated after an explosion on several nearby fuel hours.
MOBILE, Ala.—Firefighters on Thursday extinguished a huge blaze that erupted hours earlier when two fuel barges exploded, leaving three people with critical burns and forcing the evacuation of crew from a nearby cruise ship.
The cause of the explosions remained under investigation, but investigators believe it was likely from a spark caused by a crew cleaning the barges, Coast Guard Lt. Mike Clausen said.
Firefighters from Mobile and Coast Guard officials responded to the pair of Wednesday night explosions involving the gas barges in the Mobile River east of downtown. More explosions followed over the next few hours.
Authorities say three people were brought to the University of South Alabama Medical Center for burn-related injuries. The three remained in critical condition Thursday morning, hospital spokesman Bob Lowry said.
Across the river, workers were evacuated from the Carnival Triumph, the cruise ship that became disabled in the Gulf of Mexico in February before it was towed to Mobile’s port for repairs. A cruise spokesman said none of its workers were injured and there was no damage to the ship.

Firefighters and emergency officials extinguished a massive fire that erupted when two fuel barges exploded in Mobile, Ala. According to a report by CBS News on April 24, the explosion left three people with critical burns and forced the evacuation of a crew from a nearby cruise ship.
Authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire, which started Wednesday night, but initial investigations are showing that it may have been accidental.
The three people severely burned during the fire were taken to the University of South Alabama Medical Center for treatment. According to hospital nursing administrator Danny Whatley, all three remain in critical condition as of early Thursday .
Crew members have returned to the Carnival Triumph after being forced to leave the ship as a precaution following Wednesday night's barge explosions in the Mobile River.
Almost 800 crew members were initially told they would be accommodated at the Convention Center, however, they ended up at the Civic Center.
The barges are owned by Houston-based company Kirby Inland Marine. Greg Beuerman, a company spokesman, told the Miami Herald that the barges contained a liquid called natural gasoline on board- which he stated is neither liquefied natural gas or natural gas. He also told the Herald that the company has dispatched their own team to work with investigators in order to determine what exactly caused the fire.

The Carnival cruise ship Triumph might just be one of the most unluckiest ships of modern times. While in the shipyard getting major repairs, from two other incidents, the Triumph needed to be evacuated due to two barges nearby exploding several times igniting a fire that was too hot for firefighters to fight at the onset, according to Fox News live on April 25, 2013.
According to NBC Local News, on Wednesday night a total of seven explosions came from two barges in the Mobile River. As a precaution the 800 crew members of the Triumph were told to evacuate the ship. They were temporarily housed at the Civic Center, which was a different place than they were originally told they'd be accommodated, which was the Convention Center.
The South Alabama branch of the Salvation Army posted pictures showing Triumph's crew receiving food and beverages while waiting for the fire to be deemed under control, paving the way for the staff to board the ship once again. The crew was allowed to get back on the ship on Thursday morning.
The Triumph was the ship stranded at sea for five days in February without power, putting the passengers in deplorable living conditions. The ships toilets were overflowing into the halls, food was scarce and the stench became so unbearable that it turned into a nightmare at sea for most of the passengers.
Then it was towed to the Mobile, Alabama shipyard and high winds pulled the ship from it

A Carnival cruise ship had to be evacuated after two fuel barges in Mobile, Alabama exploded late Wednesday night.
Officials say three people were seriously injured in the blast and are in critical condition. Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the fire, but say it’s likely that a cleaning crew caused a spark which ignited.
The cruise ship is the very one which broke down in the Gulf of Mexico in February and had to be towed into Mobile; it has been docked there fore repairs since that time. No one aboard the ship was injured, but witnesses say the explosions were like nothing they’d ever seen before.
“It literally sounded like bombs going off around. The sky just lit up in orange and red,” said Alan Waugh, who lives across the river from where the barges went up in flames, “We could smell something in the air, we didn’t know if it was gas or smoke.”
As of right now, the fire is out, but officials say a full investigation will take place.
