Kelly, together with Chris Smith, shot to stardom in 1992 with 'Jump,' which spent eight weeks on top of the Billboard Hot 100.
The duo opened for Michael Jackson that year on his Dangerous World Tour.
And their penchant for wearing their clothes backward were, at least for a time, widely emulated.
'I'm wearing my clothes to work backwards tomorrow,' Michael Skolnik, editor in chief of the hip hop site Global Grind said, when he learned of the death.
Leslie Tookes, a CNN project coordinator, lived next door to Kelly. Like others, she too was saddened by his untimely death.
'We often heard him playing classical music and the piano,' Tookes said. 'He was a low-key type of person who was very talented and courteous, friendly and wonderful to our 5-year-old twins.
'Indeed, gone too soon.'
Discovered at a mall
Kelly and Smith were 13-year-olds when they were discovered in 1991 at an Atlanta mall by producer Jermaine Dupri.
Going by the stage name Mac Daddy (with Smith known as Daddy Mac), the pair followed up their smash 'Jump' with the single 'Warm It Up.'

The Fulton County Medical Examiner's office announced that the 34-year-old rapper was pronounced dead at about 5:00 pm today after being taken to Atlanta Medical Center.

His mother, Donna Kelly Pratte, and The So So Def Family have released a statement about his untimely passing:

To millions of fans worldwide, he was the trendsetting, backwards pants-wearing one-half of Kris Kross who loved making music. But to us, he was just Chris – the kind, generous and fun-loving life of the party. Though he was only with us a short time, we feel blessed to have been able to share some incredible moments with him. His legacy will live on through his music, and we will forever love him.”
Chris had worked with Chris Smith to bring Kris Kross to fame with hits like Jump.

Drug overdose suspected as cause of death.
Chris Kelly, half of the 1990s kid rap duo Kris Kross who made one of the decade's most memorable songs with the frenetic Jump, died at an Atlanta hospital on Wednesday of an apparent drug overdose at his home, authorities said. He was 34.
'It appears it may have been a possible drug overdose,' said Cpl. Kay Lester, a spokeswoman for the Fulton County police.
This, Lester said, is based on statements received at the scene as well as evidence turned up at Kelly's home in south Atlanta.
According to Lester, police were called to Kelly's home at around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. He was transported to the south campus of the Atlanta Medical Center.
Investigator Betty Honey of the Fulton County Medical Examiner's office said Kelly was pronounced dead at the hospital at around 5 p.m. Wednesday.
No official cause of death has been determined, pending an autopsy.
Kelly, known as 'Mac Daddy,' and Chris Smith, known as 'Daddy Mac,' were introduced to the music world in 1992 by music producer and rapper Jermaine Dupri after he discovered the pair in an Atlanta mall. The duo wore their clothes backwards as a gimmick, but they won over fans with their raps.

In a statement investigator Betty Honey of the Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office said she pronounced Kelly dead around 5pm on Wednesday at the Atlanta Medical Center.
Honey said authorities are unsure of Kelly's cause of death and that an autopsy has yet to be performed.
Legendary Atlanta radio host DJ Greg Street said Kelly's cousin had phoned him with the news.
'Around 7.45 I received a phone call from his cousin saying they had found Kelly at the house just 20 minutes earlier and he was unresponsive,' Street wrote.
'I just received confirmation that he has passed.'
Twitter quickly became alive with condolences from celebrities and friends alike.
Fellow rapper and actor LL Cool J dedicated a song to the departed rapper, tweeting 'R.I.P Chris Kelly. This song is now officially dedicated to you. May GOD embrace your soul & lift up your family.'
Actress Alyssa Milano was also quick to pay her respects to Kelly's memory tweeting 'Rest in peace. Chris Kelly #KrisKross #jumpjump.'
