Comedy Central's series Inside Amy Schumer is a mix of traditional stand-up comedy, sketches and on-the-street interviews that in its best moments produces genuine laughs. Schumer first appeared on television in 2007, placing fourth in the fifth season of NBC's Last Comic Standing. Since then, she's established a relationship with Comedy Central that has included the broadcast of two specials (in 2010 and 2012) as well as her appearances on several of the cable network's celebrity roasts.
The first two episodes of her new series focus a lot on 'I'm a slut, isn't that hilarious?' jokes in the stand-up segments, which aren't the strongest (neither are the street interviews, which feels like a Jay Leno-type ploy. Her one-on-one interviews with a model and a stripper also lack real interest), but the scripted sketches are well-written and well-performed. The opening vignette, a play on the infamous '2 Girls 1 Cup' scat porn video, may turn some viewers off, but it's a good litmus test for whether folks will want to hang on, as Schumer never backs down from discussing the weird, crass and graphic side of sexuality.

Pulling no punches and baring no pretense, the viewer is immediately treated to sketch in which two women are auditioning for the infamous '2 Girls 1 Cup' viral video, with an explanation as filthy (and censored) as you'd expect. The saving grace? It's wickedly funny.
That's creator and star, comedienne Amy Schumer, in a nutshell. A mainstay of the Comedy Central Roast scene, Schumer's earned herself a reputation for embracing topics like sex, relationships and race in a way that'll have you laughing before you can wonder if you really ought to be.
For her first foray into series television, Schumer has created a show that embraces her comedic persona, warts and all. 'Inside Amy Schumer' which premiered April 30 on Comedy Central, is packed to the brim with every type of comedic scene: sketch, stand-up, man on the street, and a longer one-on-one interview. Some hit with a larger degree of success than others.
Schumer shines in the moments that allow her to be herself, as in the very funny segments on the streets of New York City or her interview with a random model. In these moments, as well as her stand-up bits, her winning quick wit is on display. It's when the show ventures into sketch comedy (the aforementioned first sketch aside) that Schumer falters.

(Sorry, Sarah Silverman, Chelsea Handler, Whitney Cummings, and anyone else mentioned in trend pieces about “edgy” comediennes.) Many of these women are what the writer Gillian Flynn calls “the Cool Girl” type: Watching them perform, you’re not so much looking at a real person as a character, one that has been dreamed up by a woman who “watched too many movies written by socially awkward men who’d like to believe that this kind of woman exists and might kiss them,” as Flynn put it in her novel Gone Girl. When a Cool Girl tells a cruel joke about other women, she makes all the other Cool Girls in the audience laugh, because, obviously, these jokes aren’t about them — they’re about those other bitches, who totally deserve it. In other words, Cool Girls aren’t that cool.
