A DAREDEVIL who held the Guinness World Record for distance travelled on a zip-line while hanging by his hair has died while performing a new stunt.
Sailendra Nath Roy, a 49-year-old police driver from India, was attempting to cross the turbulent River Teesta on Sunday in the state of West Bengal on a 180m wire above the water.
After attaching his shoulder-length hair to a pulley on the zip-line, Roy had completed about half of the distance when his pony-tail became entangled and he found himself unable to move, an AFP photographer at the scene said.
Hundreds of spectators initially cheered him on, but then began screaming in horror when they saw the married father of two sons making increasingly desperate attempts to move forward.
'Roy tried frantically to get hold of a second rope to reach the finishing point,' senior local police officer K. Jayaraman told AFP.
After about 20 minutes, he became motionless and was eventually rescued by local people. No ambulance or a doctor was present during the performance, which was watched by his family.
The driver, who had taken the day off work to perform, was admitted to hospital in Siliguri, 450 kilometres away, where he was declared dead by doctors of a suspected heart attack.

A stuntman’s attempt to cross India’s Teesta River by his ponytail, a pulley and a zipline proved fatal.
Sailendra Nath Roy, a Guinness World Record holder for traveling the farthest distance on a zipline using his hair, died from a heart attack Sunday while trying to repeat the stunt, BBC reports.
Roy had attached his hair to a pulley and was attempting to cross the 600-foot long zip wire that hung 70 feet above the water when his hair became tangled roughly halfway across and he became stuck.
'He was desperately trying to move forward. He was trying to scream out some instruction. But no one could follow what he was saying. After struggling for 30 minutes, he became still,' Balai Sutradhar, a photographer, told BBC.
Roy hanged for 45 minutes before being pulled to shore. Besides his lifejacket, no emergency measures were implemented. Police say Roy didn’t have permission to perform the stunt.
“Preliminary investigations suggest that Roy suffered a heart attack caused by a nervous breakdown after remaining suspended for several minutes,' B.R. Satpathi, from West Bengal state's medical services, told India Times.
His family watched the stunt, which he said would be his last, a friend told BBC.
In 2011, Roy made it into the Guinness World Records for crossing 270.6 feet on a zipwire using his hair. Last year, he tied a chain to his hair and dragged an eng

* His hair became stuck in the wheeler about half way through stunt
* Tried to free himself but suffered massive cardiac arrest .
A stuntman died yesterday during a world record attempt as he tried to cross a river on a zip-wire attached only to his hair.
Sailendra Nath Roy, 50, was half way through the stunt when his ponytail became stuck in the wheeler of the rope and he was left hanging in mid-air for about 25 minutes.
Despite desperate attempts to free himself, it is believed Mr Roy then suffered a major cardiac arrest and died.
Mr Roy, a West Bengal Police home guard, already held the Guinness world record for the farthest distance travelled on a zip wire using his hair. Mr Roy attempted to free himself after his ponytail became caught in the wheeler and then tried to continue the crossing using only his hands.
However, local media said he then suffered a massive cardiac arrest.
Rescuers brought him down from the Coronation Bridge about 45 minutes later.
He was taken to a nearby hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
Onlookers said spectators had initially failed to realise Mr Roy was in trouble because of the cheers coming from the crowd.
The stuntman had held several Guinness world records for pulling vehicles with his hair.
