Uttarakhand: Rescue efforts in full swing; toll 58, 72000 stranded

Uttarakhand continues to face nature's fury with torrential monsoon rains ravaging large parts of the state. At least 58 people have died and nearly 72,000 are still stranded across Uttarakhand with the holy town of Kedarnath being the worst hit. Sources in the state government claim that death toll in Kedarnath could be high as relief and rescue efforts have started in full swing.
The Army and IAF along with NDRF teams are helping the civil administration in carrying out relief and rescue work. Two IAF helicopters ferried about 200 stranded pilgrims from the Kedarnath shrine to Fata helipad in Rudraprayag district. The rescue efforts were launched on a war footing with no fresh spell of rain on Tuesday morning at most places in Uttarakhand, officials said..
