World War Z opens big at the boxoffice, focusing the studio's sights on a sequel.
No one could have ever imagined World War Z's box office success. The zombie thriller opened at $112 million wordwide, bringing in around $66 million domestically. And get this, according to Paramount, this was the largest domestic opening for an original live action film since Avatar. We originally heard that World War Z was going to be the tentpole of a new zombie franchise, but with all of the production issues on this first film, many were just hoping they could re-coop the $190 million bucks they spent on it. But now, thanks to its surprising success, Paramount's Vice Chairman Rob Moore told THR that the studio is now focusing their sights on the development of a sequel.
Belive it or not, this film was also a new milestone for Brad Pitt, as it was his biggest box office opening ever. His now second place box office hit was Mr. & Mrs. Smith which made about $50 million, followed by Troy which made around $46 million. The actor spoke to E!News about the possibility of a sequel, to which he said 'we gotta see if this one works first. But there's ton of information to mine from the book, certainly.'.
