കുഞ്ഞുങ്ങളുടെ പ്രിയങ്കരനായ മിക്കിയുടെ കഥ ഇങ്ങനെ . മറ്റൊരു കാർട്ടൂൺ കഥാപാത്രത്തിനു പകരക്കാരനായി വന്ന താരമാണ് മിക്കി മൗസ്. 1920കളിൽ ഡിസ്നി കമ്പനിയുടെതന്നെ ഭാവനയിൽ പിറന്ന ഓസ്‍വാൾഡ് ദ് ലക്കി റാബിറ്റ് എന്ന മുയലിന് പകരക്കാരനെ അന്വേഷിച്ചപ്പോൾ ജന്മമെടുത്തതാണ് മിക്കി. തന്നെ ചതിച്ച സിനിമാ നിർമാതാവ് ചാൾസ് മിന്റ്സിനോട് വാൾട്ട് ഡിസ്നിയുടെ പ്രതികാരമാണ് മിക്കിയുടെ ജനനത്തിലേക്കു നയിച്ചത്. ഡിസ്നി കമ്പനിയുടെ കാർട്ടൂൺ ചിത്രങ്ങൾ മിന്റ്സായിരുന്നു ആദ്യകാലങ്ങളിൽ വിതരണത്തിനെടുത്തിരുന്നത്. ലാഭ വിഹിതം കൂട്ടണമെന്ന് ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ട ഡിസ്നിയോട് കാർട്ടൂണിന്റെ അവകാശം വിതരണക്കാരായ യൂണിവേഴ്സൽ സ്റ്റുഡിയോസിൽ നിക്ഷിപ്തമാണെന്ന വാദമാണു മറുപടിയായി ലഭിച്ചത്. കൂടാതെ തന്റെ കലാകാരൻമാരെ മിന്റ്സ് സ്വന്തമാക്കിയെന്ന വിവരം ഡിസ്നിയെ തളർത്തി. ഡിസ്നിക്ക് വട്ടപ്പൂജ്യത്തിൽനിന്ന് തുടങ്ങേണ്ടിവന്നു. 1928ൽ സ്റ്റുഡിയോയിൽ വളർത്തിയിരുന്ന ഒരു കുഞ്ഞൻ എലിയെ ശ്രദ്ധിച്ചപ്പോഴാണ് ഡിസ്നിക്ക് ‘ആശയം ഉദിച്ചത് ലൊസാഞ്ചലസിലേക്ക് ഭാര്യയുമൊത്തുള്ള ട്രെയിൻ യാത്രയിലാണ് എലിക്കുഞ്ഞിനെ കഥാപാത്രമാക്കിയാലോ എന്ന ആശയം മനസ്സിൽ വിരിയുന്നത്.
മിക്കിയെ കഥാപാത്രമാക്കിയ ആദ്യ രണ്ടു ചിത്രങ്ങൾ പുറത്തിറങ്ങിയില്ല. മൂന്നാം ചിത്രമാണ് മിക്കി മൗസിന്റെ ഗതി മാറ്റിയെഴുതിയത്. ഹ്രസ്വ അനിമേഷൻ ചിത്രമായ പ്ലെയിൻ ക്രെയ്സിയിലാണ് മിക്കിയെ ഡിസ്നി ആദ്യമായി അവതരിപ്പിച്ചത്. 1928 മേയ് 15ന് ക്ഷണിക്കപ്പെട്ട സദസ്സിനു മുന്നിൽ ടെസ്റ്റ് സ്ക്രീനിങ് നടന്നു. പക്ഷേ, കാണികളെ ആകർഷിക്കാൻ മിക്കിക്കായില്ല. നിരാശനായ ഡിസ്നി വീണ്ടും മിക്കിയെ ഫിലിമിലാക്കി. ഗാലപ്പിങ് കൗച്ചോ എന്ന ചെറുചിത്രത്തിലൂടെ. ഈ ചിത്രത്തിനും വിതരണക്കാരെ കിട്ടിയില്ല.
