Royal Baby: Duchess of Cambridge gives birth to a boy - as it happened

Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, has given birth to a baby boy. The unnamed son is third in line to the throne. Both mother and child are doing well, Kensington Palace said in a short statement. They will both remain in hospital overnight.

The son of Prince William and Middleton weighed 8lbs 6oz (3.6kg). He was delivered at 4.24pm in the maternity wing of St Mary's hospital, London, by natural birth. The Duke of Cambridge was at the bedside.

'We could not be happier,' William said in a statement. A Buckingham palace spokesman said the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh are 'delighted at the news'. The prime minister, David Cameron, predicted William and Kate will 'make wonderful parents'.

Hundreds gathered outside the hospital to celebrate the news. The crowd sang: 'Happy birthday dear royal baby,' in absence of a name. Later several hundred people were outside Buckingham Palace, where an ornate easel announced the birth.

The birth of the royal baby had been followed around the world. In America rolling news channels devoted their coverage to the birth, while Australia prime minister Kevin Rudd sent his country's 'warmest regards' to the new family.

The Duchess of Cambridge has taken part in her last solo engagement before her baby is born, naming a new cruise liner. Kate, who is around eight months pregnant, was asked to be godmother of Princess Cruises' 3,600-passenger vessel the Royal Princess, continuing a tradition which began in the mid-19th century. Ahead of releasing a 15-litre bottle of champagne which smashed into the ship's hull, the Duchess said: 'I name this ship Royal Princess, may God bless her and all who sail in her.'

Prince WiIliam and Kate William are now parents to a baby boy.

A new son has risen over Britain.
Prince William and Kate Middleton, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, welcomed a healthy baby boy Monday at 4:24 p.m. London time, Buckingham Palace announced.
The baby, weighing in at a robust 8 pounds and 6 ounces, is third in line to the British throne, behind his grandfather, Prince Charles, and his joyful dad.

“We could not be happier,” the 31-year-old William said in a statement.
For now, the name of the regal newcomer remains a mystery.
But his arrival was greeted noisily in London. “May he be long-lived, happy and glorious and one day reign over us. God save the queen!” said town crier Tony Appleton as he shouted the news on the steps of St. Mary’s Hospital in west London, where Middleton, 31, had given birth.

Early indications were that the pregnancy — relentlessly scrutinized since it was first announced in December — concluded smoothly.
“Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well and will remain in hospital overnight,” said a statement from the royal family.
The infant’s formal title is His Royal Highness the Prince of Cambridge. As for his name, it will be revealed “in due course,” the family statement said.
