During the 1999 Kargil war, the Indian Army had faced immense difficulty in recapturing its posts located at several high-altitude peaks in the J&K district after an infiltration took place from the other side of the border or Pakistan. One reason for this was the lack of institutionalised training in mountain warfare in the region. The situation, however, changed in 2000 when the Kargil Battle School was opened for providing pre-induction training to soldiers, who are deployed in the heights along the Line of Control (LoC) in this region. Cobra Digendra Kumar, the hero of the country who at the age of 30 was awarded the country's second highest gallantry award Mahavir Chakra by the then President KR Narayanan. During the Kargil war, he not only brought great success to the country by killing 48 Pakistani soldiers with the help of his team, but despite being hit by five bullets, recaptured the peak of Tololing by beheading the Pakistani Major and hoisted the tricolor on the morning of 13th June.
