Mahindra and Mahindra(MAHM.NS), India's largest sports utility vehicle maker, has made its first push into the country's small car market a week after warning that fierce competition could erode its dominant SUV position.
SUV sales have been a strong point for some manufacturers in India over the past year, even as sales of the smaller cars that account for most of the passenger vehicle market slumped.
Having a presence in the small car market will be a positive if demand returns in the next fiscal year, but Mahindra will have to compete with established brands such as Maruti Suzuki India Ltd (MRTI.NS) and South Korea's Hyundai Motor Co (005380.KS).
On Wednesday, Mahindra launched the Verito Vibe, a compact version of its sedan, at a starting price of 563,000 rupees - among the cheapest of its passenger vehicles.
'Verito Vibe gives us the opportunity to play in the large and highly competitive compact car segment,' Pravin Shah, head of Mahindra's automotive division, told reporters.
The flagship company of the $16 billion Mahindra Group builds every other SUV sold in India, but its share in the segment fell to 48 percent in the fiscal year that ended in March from 56 percent a year earlier, according to data from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM).

Mahindra will finally launch its long awaited sub-4-metre offering, the Vibe hatchback today. While complete details of the new car have been a tight lipped affair, our recent drive in the new chopped down Verito has us really impressed on many fronts.
We found the car to be rather roomy and well-equipped for a hatch and considering its meek proportions, all its merits of being a scaled down Verito sedan means it is most likely to fit your budget. The engine will be the same 1.5-litre, 65PS dCi diesel unit that does duty on the Verito.

India's largest utility vehicle maker, Mahindra & Mahindra on Monday launched a new compact car Verito Vibe at Rs 5.63 lakh to Rs 6.49 lakh (ex-showroom Mumbai) excluding Octroi.
Developed with an investment of Rs 60 crore on the Renault's Logan platform, the sub-4 metre Verito Vibe shares 80% common parts with its elder sibling Verito sedan and is available only in the 1.5 litre dci diesel option. M&M claims, Verito Vibe has the looks of a hatchback but offers features and space of a sedan.
With the Vibe hatchback and Verito sedan, M&M will now be catering to 1 million unit compact car space. With this hatchback, M&M intends to take on Maruti Suzuki Swift, Swift Dzire and Honda Amaze. M&M says in terms of price Vibe is Rs 40, 000 cheaper than Maruti Suzuki Swift and almost Rs 1.52 lakh lower than Honda Amaze.
Pawan Goenka, president, automotive & farm equipment sector Mahindra & Mahindra said, 'With the launch of Vibe we will be catering to a larger pie of compact car space. Most of the sub-4 metre cars have been derived from a hatchback, which leads to compromising on space but since the Vibe has been created out of a sedan, it offers the best in class space and features and offers significant value to the customers.'
