A #circulareconomy is a systemic approach to economic development designed to benefit businesses, society, and the environment. A circular economy reveals and designs out the negative impacts of economic activity that cause damage to human health and natural systems. This includes the release of greenhouse gases and hazardous substances, the pollution of air, land, and water, as well as structural waste such as traffic congestion. The current paradigm of linear economic model could be coming to an end and its place will be taken by the circular economy. The current model of production and management of resources, goods and services that seeks to promote short-term consumption is leading the planet to an unsustainable situation. The current economic system is the opposite of the life cycle of nature and collides with sustainable development, focused on the long term. In nature there is no waste or landfill: all elements play a role continuously and are reused in different stages.
The new model of circular economy is meant to allow the planet to breathe, while leaving no one behind. By decoupling economic growth from resource use, setting global standards in product sustainability, keeping resource use within planetary boundaries and promoting the re-use of materials, circular economy may be the only sustainable economic model for the future. Secondly, the circular economy promotes the use of as many biodegradable materials as possible in the manufacture of products -biological nutrients- so they can get back to nature without causing environmental damage at the end of their useful life. When it is not possible to use eco-friendly materials -technical nutrients: electronics, hardware, batteries... - the aim is to facilitate a simple uncoupling to give them a new life by reintroducing them into the production cycle and composing a new piece. When this is not possible, it will be recycled in a respectful way with the environment. Circular economy is a substanti

Future of Circular Economy
The circular economy can be compared to our current, predominantly linear one. Today we take something from the ground, make something out of it, and at the end of the life of that material, it gets thrown away. But in the case of a circular economy, you would keep products and materials in use for as long as possible. The key principle of the circular economy is regeneration. “Anything that physically biodegrades has the opportunity to regenerate natural systems, and all that is underpinned by the shift to renewable energy”. Despite massive changes to the way we approach waste and resources, the benefit of a circular economy isn’t just environmental, it’s egalitarian: “You end up with a much more distributed economy, a much more diverse economy, and a much more inclusive economy. It is a model that is based on the principles of designing out waste and pollution, keeping products and materials in use, and regenerating natural systems.
In a circular economy, manufacturers design products to be reusable. For example, electrical devices are designed in such a way that they are easier to repair. Products and raw materials are also reused as much as possible. For example, by recycling plastic into pellets for making new plastic products. In a circular economy we treat our surroundings responsibly. As the world population is growing this is affecting the environment. To ensure there’s enough food, water and prosperity in 2050, there is a need to switch from a linear to a circular economy. That’s why certain countries have developed the Government-wide programme for a Circular Economy. The aim is to ensure healthy and safe living and working conditions, and cause less harm to the environment. For example, waste glass is used to make new glass and waste paper is used to make new paper. To ensure that in the future there are enough raw materials for food, shelter, heating and other nec

Digital Twins helping the Circular Economy
Digital twin refers to a digital replica of physical assets (physical twin), processes and systems that can be used for various purposes. The digital representation provides both the elements and the dynamics of how an Internet of things device operates and lives throughout its life cycle. The ABI Research forecasts that the world economy will achieve over 10.5% circularity by 2030, as sustainability and incoming legislation start to take effect where Digital Twins play a key role. The circular economy is a key sustainability strategy being adopted by world and industry leaders in the fight against climate change and though still in its infancy in terms of data and metrics. It is a growing phenomenon and tech industries, such as IoT for asset tracking, are set to grow rapidly in the next five years. Circularity concepts such as remanufacturing, reuse, and the sharing economy will be critically enabled by smart cities technologies such as IoT, AI and Digital Twins.” Furthermore, many different tech companies are engaging in circular concepts such as Cityzenith’s Digital Twin platform SmartWorldOS, which helps companies design out waste in their projects.
With around 70% of people expected to be living in cities by 2050 it is essential that urban infrastructure can support this population volume and density, so ‘smart cities’ and their technologies will be essential to the circular economy. Secondly, many current smart city technologies already support a circular economy such as the sharing economy, smart lighting, and green infrastructure. “However, these technologies need to adopt circular practices from cradle-to-grave to make full use of the opportunities brought by the circular economy,” ABI Research’s Lindsey Vest concludes. Digital Twin technology has been named by the World Nano Foundation as one of five top tech growth sectors, including n
