When we hear the name Javagal Srinath the first thing which comes to our mind is a guy who was from India but could still bowl fast. Such was the disconnect between genuine pace bowlers and the medium pacers coming from India those days. Srinath had an illustrious career, and was the spearhead of the Indian fast bowling for a large part of his career. At the peak of his career his bowling speed was around 150km/hr with his fastest delivery being bowled at 154.5km/hr. He was a wonderful ambassador to the game of cricket.
Post-retirement, Srinath had a stint as a TV commentator and later went on to become a member of the ICC match referee panel in 2006. In November, 2010, Javagal Srinath stood for the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) elections as part of Anil Kumble’s team and was elected as the secretary of the apex body by defeating former umpire, A V Jayaprakash.

Joginder Sharma’s name will be edged forever in the history books of Indian cricket. The right-arm pacer bowled the final over of the World T20 in South Africa in 2007. He was a hero for the entire nation. But, what can baffle many fans, is the fact the ball which got Misbah-ul-Haq out in Johannesburg was the last ever ball which he bowled in international cricket.
After that famous win, Sharma found it difficult to make a cut into the Indian squad. Probably, he wouldn’t have been on that flight to South Africa in 2007, had Zaheer Khan not got injured. He played for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL. He represented Haryana till 2017, after which he hasn’t played any top-level cricket. He only ever played four ODIs and four T20Is for India.
During the early times of the lockdown, he once again came in news, when he was seen helping medical officials in their fight against coronavirus. He is serving as the Deputy Superintendent of the Haryana Police currently.

Paul Valthaty was one of the umpteen talents which got recognised through the Indian Premier League. Valthaty, playing for Kings XI Punjab in 2011, lit the Mohali stadium with a stupendous unbeaten 120 to deflate the eventual champions of the season, Chennai Super Kings.
Valthaty spent almost a decade in the wilderness between 2002 and 2011. Rewind to 2002, Valthaty was representing India in the U-19 World Cup along the likes of Parthiv Patel and Irfan Pathan. In a game against Bangladesh, while batting on 5, he was struck under his right eye. It was a serious injury and kept Valthaty out of action for a while.
The only chance that came his way was four years later in 2006 when he debuted for Mumbai in a one-day game against Baroda. A 31-ball 16 batting at No. 6 meant that he won’t be playing again for Mumbai for a while.
“Those were some tough times. When you don’t know if you’ll play again or not is one of the scariest feelings. You can barely go to sleep when you have such doubts creep in. If it wasn’t for my family and their drive to keep me interested, I would’ve probably stopped (playing) then. But once I healed and got back to playing, I knew I could make it up the ladder again” said Valthaty in conversation with Wisden India.
The IPL arrived and Valthaty managed to bag a contract with Rajasthan Royals but two years with the franchise could result in just two games, both coming in 2009. The now 33-year-old sat the entire season of 2010 out. Abhishek Nayar was acquired by Kings XI Punjab in 2011, who then recommended Valthaty and then came his moment. Soon he was sent to open the innings with Australian great Adam Gilchrist and then came that magical 120*.

Former India batsman Dinesh Mongia called time on his cricket career on September 17, 2019. Mongia is best remembered for being picked over VVS Laxman in the Indian squad for the ICC World Cup 2003 in South Africa, where the Men in Blue ended up as runners-up, after being defeated by Australia in the finals.
Mongia, who hailed from Punjab, made his debut for the state in 1995-96, was a prolific run-getter in the domestic circuit. The left-handed batsman was also a capable left-arm spinner who plied his trade effectively in the English county cricket as well, where he was signed by Lancashire in 2004 in place of Stuart Law and then in 2005, Leicestershire signed him for a full-time contract. He has also made appearances for the Lashings XI team as well.
Dinesh Mongia made 8028 runs in 121 FC matches at an average of 48.95 and the best score of 308* with 27 centuries and 28 half-centuries. He amassed 5535 runs in 198 List-A games with 10 centuries and 26 fifties. He made his India debut in 2001 in Pune ODI against Australia but came into prominence for his 159* against Zimbabwe in just 147 balls.
Kinks in his technique were exposed on tours to New Zealand and England and after a below-par performance in the 2003 World Cup, he was dropped from the team in 2005, with his last match coming against Bangladesh in 2007. He also appeared in India’s first-ever T20I match against South Africa in 2006. He played 57 ODIs making 1230 runs with one century and in the sole T20I, he made 38 runs.
However, his connection with the much-maligned Indian Cricket League (ICL), left him without much support once BCCI managed to force the unsanctioned league to draw its curtains down. “Those were hard days,” recalled Mongia, who was quoted as saying by The Hindu. Most players banned by the Board for their association with the ICL were granted amnesty but Mongia remained the lone cricketer who was kept out of the official circuit.
However, he was

There is so much of competition in Indian cricket right now that in spite of featuring in more than 80 IPL matches and proving himself as a reliable left-arm pacer, Jaydev Unadkat has played just 7 ODIs and 10 T20Is for India. In fact, the last time Unadkat wore the Indian jersey in the international arena was in March 2018.
Jaydev Unadkat set an example for many upcoming bowlers of how to knock the door of the national selectors through their performances. His record-breaking Ranji Trophy as captain helped Saurashtra win their first Ranji Trophy title since changing their name. Saurashtra was referred to as Nawanagar and Western India who won the Ranji title in 1936-37 and 1943-44 respectively. In the 2019-20 Ranji Trophy, Unadkat claimed 67 wickets which are the most for any pacer surpassing Dooda Ganesh’s 62 wickets in 1998-99 season.
In fact, the left-arm pacer’s 67 wickets are only behind Ashutosh Aman’s 68 wickets during the 2018-19 season in the list of most wickets in a Ranji Trophy edition. Adding to those 67 wickets, Jaydev scalped 76 wickets in first-class cricket during the 2019-20 season which includes 9 wickets in the Duleep Trophy at the start of the season. The 76 wickets put Unadkat among the top-15 list of most wickets picked up in a first-class season on Indian soil.

Makhaya Ntini during his prime was the core of the South African pace attack. He was not express quick. But, he was naturally aggressive and always fit for all seasons. Varying lengths and resorting to short pitched stuff was his way of dealing with the batsmen. His pre-delivery sideways leap was an unique part of his bowling style. His contribution to the South African cricket is great. It was kind of path breaking for many South Africans. He opened the door and inspired many young, black South African cricketers play the sport and represent their country.
Ntini is renowned as the second ethnically black player after Paul Adams to play for the South African national cricket team and featured across all the formats for the Proteas. In his illustrious cricket career that spanned from 1998 to 2009, Makhaya featured in a whopping 101 Test matches for South Africa scalping 390 wickets at an economy of 2.23. The seamer also played 173 One Day Internationals along with 10 T20Is and picked 266 and 6 wickets, respectively at an economy of 4.53 and 9.31.

Haseeb Hameed stole the limelight with a gritty fifty in the third Test at Leeds. He first burst into the scene as a 19-year-old kid. In the 2016 season of Championship cricket (his first full season), he became the youngest Lancastrian to score 1000 runs, breaking Michael Atherton’s record. He also became the fifth-youngest to score 1000 runs for Lancashire in a season and the first to score a hundred in both the innings of the Roses match. His impeccable record in that season earned him a spot in the England men’s Test squad against India
What a way for him to start his Test career, as he got his Test cap in the first match of the five-match series from Michael Atherton himself in Gujarat, where his parents were originally from. What makes this even more special is that he became the youngest debutant to open for England in a Test match. He looked at ease as he made 31 and 82 in his debut in Rajkot, creating an immediate impact. 82 was also the highest Test score by a teenager for England, beating Jack Crawford’s 74 in Cape Town in 1906.
What was also magnificent to watch was the way he constructed that innings. Despite the pain he was going through, he wasn’t in a hurry to score runs while Joe Root or Chris Woakes were on the crease. As soon as Woakes got out, he started farming as much strike as possible. The youngster’s score was 23 in 127 balls then and he was quick to change his gears as before the last wicket was down, he added 36 to his score in just 29 balls. It was later announced that he couldn’t take part in the rest of the series.
