The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced on February 25 key decisions taken in the IPL Governing Council meeting, held virtually a day before, regarding the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League.
With the addition of two new members – Lucknow Supergiant and Gujarat Titans – in the previously existing family of eight, the IPL has rewound to the 2011 model when the league had opened doors to two new teams – Pune Warriors India and Kochi Tuskers Kerala (both defunct).
Much like in 2011, the 2022 system has left plenty scratching their heads as it was confirmed on February 25 that the ten teams have been divided into two groups of five each, with the league extending to 70 matches followed by four playoffs. All that and a bit more simplified below:
What are the groupings for IPL 2022?
The teams have been divided into two virtual groups based on a seeding system formulated by the number of titles won and the number of finals played.
Mumbai Indians, the five-time champions, fall in group A, which has two former champions in Kolkata Knight Riders (three titles) and Rajasthan Royals (one title) alongside two-time finalists Delhi Capitals and new entrant Lucknow Supergiants.
Group B, on the other hand, includes four-time winners Chennai Super Kings stacked alongside Sunrisers Hyderabad (one title), three-time finalists Royal Challengers Bangalore, Punjab Kings (one final) and Gujarat Titans.

The Hundred, the 100 ball format, is all set to begin from July 21. The England and Wales Cricket Board’s proposed new format was hit with several road blocks due to COVID-19 and other logistical reasons, but now it is all set and ready to make a grand debut.
Now, the ECB has come up with the playing conditions for The Hundred and it has tweaked the rules a bit for the 100-ball game. The ECB has called goodbye to ‘overs’, as the board has decided to stick from overs to balls, to measure the innings progression. While this rule will be followed by all eight teams, the TV commenters will use overs instead of balls during the matches.
Here is all you need to know about ECB's premier tournament. #TheHundred #England #Cricket

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has currently put the proposed 10-team IPL plans on hold as of now. The Board was all set to launch two new teams in the year 2022 with a mega auction scheduled for the 15th season. However, the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic has put those plans on hold as BCCI is currently keen on finishing the 2021 tournament, which was postponed indefinitely on May 04, 2021.
The IPL was running smoothly with 29 completed games before the match between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Kolkata Knight Riders was called off due to two players from the KKR camp testing positive for the virus. The two players Varun Chakravarthy and Sandeep Warrier breached the bio-bubble norms and came to the place without serving the quarantine period.
“Time is not right to even talk about the new IPL teams at this stage. We have to first decide the way forward on the suspended season and then only decisions can be taken on the new teams for IPL 2022. No discussion in this regard is happening at this stage in the BCCI,” the official was quoted as saying by InsideSport.
“We don’t see any moment on this before July. We can’t give any timelines at this stage. As I said, no discussion currently in this regard is taking place in BCCI for now,” he added.
Earlier, it was stated that the board wanted to get the two new teams finalized by this month to give the franchises enough time to prepare for the 2022 season. Those plans have now been pushed back, although it will conduct a mega player auction next year to give all the teams a fair chance at making their squad strong.

The Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) record against the Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Wankhede has been abysmal as they have managed only a solitary victory in 2012 when Sunil Narine’s four-wicket haul guided them home. Rohit Sharma’s men are speculated to be the favourites, both due to their current form and their past record against the Knight Riders at the iconic venue.
