The Delhi Capitals (DC) have two wins in four league matches of IPL 2022 and are positioned eighth in the points table. Adding on to the opening combination, he hailed the duo of Prithvi Shaw and David Warner, who stitched a partnership of 93 runs in the last game against KKR and helped the team to post a total of 215. He mentioned that Shaw has been terrific to outperform Warner in the powerplay overs with his consistent boundaries, and termed it as a good sign for the Capitals for the remainder of the tournament.
“I feel if any team has to go to the eliminator, their opening partnership has to lay a strong foundation. Since Warner has come into the team, they have got a strong start with Shaw in terrific form and Warner complementing him well in the last match as well. Not many times you see someone outscoring David Warner, and Prithvi Shaw is doing that by hitting boundaries in powerplay overs, which is a good sign for Delhi,” said Jaffer on Sky247.net presents ‘Not Just Cricket Show’ on CricTracker.
Jaffer was surprised by the exclusion of Sarfaraz Khan to include Mitchell Marsh in the game against RCB, as he has contributed 36 runs in a single inning. Ahead of the Indian Premier League 2022 mega auction, Delhi Capitals (DC) retained Anrich Nortje, but could not find a place for another pacer Kagiso Rabada on the list. Former Indian cricketers Wasim Jaffer and Nikhil Chopra shared their views on DC’s key spinner Axar Patel.
Chopra believes Rabada and Nortje picked up wickets in the powerplay overs until the last edition, which forced the middle-order to play Patel in a cautious manner. He reckoned that the current DC bowling lineup has not been able to take wickets with the new ball, and as a result, the batters have attacked Patel when they have settled down at the crease.
“In the last season, Rabada and Nortje picked wickets in the first few overs, so the batters looked to build partnerships in the middle overs, and were a little careful. This time, not enough wickets have been taken by the DC bowlers like Shardul and Mustafizur upfront, and the batters have now tried to score runs off Axar. Jaffer reckoned that Patel is not bowling in the right manner and needs to have an attacking mindset without thinking about his economy rate. He urged Patel to follow the footsteps of Kuldeep Yadav, who has been brave enough and has taken wickets in a consistent manner. He thinks Patel performed well in the last few editions, as the opposition was already struggling in the middle overs with Rabada and Nortje picking up the first three-four wickets.

Although the Indian team secured three victories in five matches of the Super 12 stage in T20 World Cup 2021, they were unable to seal the semi-final spots due to the losses against Pakistan and New Zealand. One of the primary reasons for the team’s ordinary performances was the team’s inability to pick wickets in a consistent manner, and the absence of a quality spinner. The former Indian cricketer turned commentator Nikhil Chopra chose his spin bowlers for the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia later in the year.
Chopra chose Ravindra Jadeja as his first-choice spinner for his all-around abilities and thinks he has improved quite well as a batter in recent years and will be a definite pick for the tournament. In T20 World Cup 2021, Jadeja finished with a total of seven wickets and 39 runs in five appearances.
On being asked about the parameter to choose spinners for the ICC event, Chopra reckoned that he will look if the bowler has the quality to turn the ball and can beat the batters on most occasions. He added that Sri Lanka spinner Wanindu Hasaranga has been impressive to pick wickets with lbw or bowled dismissals and is successful in his attempt to stun the batters, and Team India needs the same type of bowler.
“I will check if he has the potential to turn the ball, or once it pitches does it do enough, and have fine variations to beat the batters. Like I have got Chahal who has predominantly picked wickets near the boundary at one end, I need to have the other spinner who would break the defense of the batters when they work in tandem. I already have a finger spinner in the form of Jadeja, and it will be a competition between Chahal and Chahar for the wrist spinner’s slot,” said Nikhil Chopra on Sky247.net presents ‘Not Just Cricket Show’ on CricTracker.
