NEWTOWN, Conn. -- A lone gunman killed 26 people at an elementary school here, including at least 18 children, in a terrifying early Friday morning shooting spree.
The Associated Press and local media reported the shooter, a 24-year-old male identified by CNN as Ryan Lanza, was also dead inside Sandy Hook Elementary School. A second person was in custody and undergoing questioning. At least three weapons were recovered at the scene, including a .223-caliber assault rifle and two semi-automatic handguns.
Mayor Mark Boughton said several victims had been taken to local hospitals.
Groups of students — some crying, some holding hands — were escorted from the school by teachers. Some witnesses reported of up to 100 shots. There were unconfirmed reports that the assailant, dressed in military style assault gear, shot most of the victims in a kindergarten classroom.

It is one of the deadliest road accidents Europe has ever seen - and most of the victims are children. A coach crash in a Swiss motorway tunnel has killed 28 people, 22 of them youngsters.
They had been heading back to Belgium after a ski-ing trip organised by their schools. The coach, carrying 52 people, crashed head on into the wall of the tunnel near the town of Sierre in the Swiss canton of Valais.
A total of 24 children were injured. Some are in a serious condition. Those caught up in the crash were aged around 12. As investigators try to understand why the tragedy happened, Belgium has declared a national day of mourning. Prime Minister Elio Di Rupo and relatives of the victims travelled to Switzerland on planes provided by Belgian authorities.
As they set off, many shocked parents still did not know whether their own youngsters had survived.

President Barack Obama Speech On Connecticut School Shooting (Cries)
Adam Lanza, the 20-year-old who killed 20 children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut this morning, was 'obviously not well,' a relative told ABC News.
Family friends in Newtown also described the young man as troubled and described his mother Nancy as very rigid. '[Adam] was not connected with the other kids,' said one friend.
Late today, police said Nancy Lanza's body was found in the family home. According to sources, Lanza shot his mother in the face, then left the house armed with at least two semi-automatic handguns and a semi-automatic rifle.
State and federal authorities believe his mother may have once worked at the elementary school where Adam went on his deadly rampage, although she was not a teacher, according to relatives, perhaps a volunteer.
As part of the investigation authorities searched the New Jersey apartment of Adam's older brother Ryan in Hoboken, New Jersey.
Police had initially identified Ryan as the killer, until he sent out a series of Facebook posts saying it wasn't him and that he was at work all day.
Sources told ABC News that Ryan, 24, works as a senior person in Ernst and Young's tax practice in Manhattan.

Sandy Hook is in a residential, wooded neighborhood about 90 minutes north of New York City. It has has 39 teachers and about 650 students. A reverse 911 call went out to parents warning of an incident. Parents were being reunited with children. But, NBC Connecticut reported, police were searching the area behind the school with guns drawn.

1 killed, 4 wounded in school shooting in Ohio
CHARDON, Ohio - A gunman opened fire inside a high school cafeteria at the start of the school day Monday, killing one student and wounding four others, authorities said. A suspect — believed to be a student — was arrested a short distance away.
The suspect was taken into custody near his car a half-mile from the suburban Cleveland school, the FBI said.
FBI agent Scott Wilson would not comment on a possible motive for the attack.
Panicked students screamed and ran through the halls when gunfire broke out around 7:30 a.m. at 1,100-student Chardon High School.
Heather Ziska, 17, said she was in the cafeteria when she and other students heard popping noises in the hall. She said she saw a boy she recognized as a fellow student come into the cafeteria and start shooting.
She said she and several others immediately ran outside, while other friends ran into a middle school and others locked themselves in a teachers' lounge.
'Everybody just started running,' said 17-year-old Megan Hennessy, who was in class when she heard loud noises. 'Everyone was running and screaming down the hallway.'
Five students were taken to Cleveland-area hospitals, officials said. One student later died, Police Chief Timothy McKenna said. The suspect is a juvenile who was not immediately charged. His name was not released.
