Building a Sustainable Tomorrow: Transforming Risks into Opportunities

Life on earth has crossed number of tipping points due to planetary emergencies. As the world continues to grapple with the risks of climate change, ecological destruction, increasing pollution, livelihoods at stake, and the pandemic; the impacts seem more severe than the previous decades. Pressure on land, water, climate, and health has drastically increased while meeting demands of the growing population with expanding consumption levels. Environmental risks are perceived to be critical long-term threats to the planet, with “climate action failure”, “extreme weather”, and “biodiversity loss” ranked as the three most severe risks as per the WEF Global Risk Report. Without major interventions, these risks will soon reach a critical stage.

Since there is no Planet B, it is high time to act. The actions that will mitigate such risks, offer an opportunity to find solutions around policy improvements, breakthrough technologies, building adaptive capacities, and a change in mindset. Addressing the global challenges involves a critical step of achieving sustainability in an integrated and coordinated manner at the global, national, regional, and local levels. The solutions for these risks need to be adapted to the local context and priorities, thereby bridging the gap between local actions and global impacts.

The 17th Sustainability Summit will bring to fore global ideas and thought leadership that will inspire action at the local level to drive sustainability transition. The Summit will build up discussions on the innovative approaches for businesses, governments, and institutions in addressing risks and opportunities in an integrated way that will build the foundation for a sustainable tomorrow.
