टापू मुल्क न्यूज़ीलैंड इन दिनों चूहों से बेहद परेशान है। चूहों ने पूरे न्यूज़ीलैंड की नाक में दम कर रखा है। इस छोटे से जीव के खात्मे कम लिए न्यूज़ीलैंड की सरकार तरह-तरह की नीतियां बना रही है। सरकार के मुताबिक चूहों का खात्मा इसलिए जरूरी है क्योंकि इनकी वजह से देश में बाकी जीव जंतुओं को बहुत नुक्सान पहुँच रहा है। यहां तक कि न्यूज़ीलैंड के राष्ट्रीय पक्षी कीवी की जनसँख्या में भी भारी कमी आई है। मौजूदा समय में पूरे न्यूज़ीलैंड में सिर्फ 70 हजार जंगली कीवी बचे हैं।
