Adversaries behind ransomware are targeting organizations of all sizes and industries

Ransomware is a form of malware designed to encrypt files on a device, rendering any files and the systems that rely on them unusable. Malicious actors then demand ransom in exchange for decryption. Ransomware is often designed to spread across a network and target database and file servers, and can thus quickly paralyze an entire organization. It is absolutely true that adversaries behind ransomware are targeting organizations of all sizes and industries. Ransomware encrypts your critical data and can bring your organization to a halt. Mitigation strategies start with awareness and prevention. It is a growing threat, generating billions of dollars in payments to cybercriminals and inflicting significant damage and expenses for businesses and governmental organizations. The attacker makes the private key available to the victim only after the ransom is paid, though as seen in recent ransomware campaigns, that is not always the case. Without access to the private key, it is nearly impossible to decrypt the files that are being held for ransom. After a successful exploit, ransomware drops and executes a malicious binary on the infected system. This binary then searches and encrypts valuable files, such as Microsoft Word documents, images, databases, and so on. The ransomware may also exploit system and network vulnerabilities to spread to other systems and possibly across entire organizations.

Digital extortion is now the most prominent form of cybercrime, meriting attention to the whole process that companies may go through, including the decision and possible negotiation behind paying ransomware. Ransomware adversaries can appear fearsome to defenders who are facing the direct impact of an attack. Ransomware attackers don’t hesitate to exploit this, with threatening and aggressive behaviour and ransom demands. But it helps to remember that adversaries are human too, and as capable of making mistakes as everyone else. Everything an attacker needs to pu.

    Ransomware can attack any organization

Ransomware is a cyber-attack on your system where hackers gain access—usually through an infected email or website—then lock your systems down and demand a ransom. And it’s big business. In fact, according to Statista, 308 million ransomware attacks occurred globally in 2020, and the percentage of global businesses victimized by ransomware has risen to 68.5%. A report warns that small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) are at particular risk based on the attack trends seen during the first six months of the year. During the first half of 2021, 4 out of 5 organizations experienced a cybersecurity breach originating from a vulnerability in their third-party vendor ecosystem. While the increase in attacks affects organizations of all sizes, something that’s under-reported in the coverage of current cyberthreat trends is the impact on the small business community.

Unlike larger corporations, small and medium-sized companies don’t have the money, resources, or staffing expertise needed to counter today’s threats. That’s why they turn to IT service providers – but if those service providers are compromised, those SMBs are at the mercy of the attackers. As seen in the SolarWinds breach last year and the Kaseya VSA attack earlier in 2021, one successful attack means they can breach hundreds or thousands of SMBs downstream. However, when we see the recent attack on the large enterprises, specially into healthcare ,Supply chain and BFSI are facing regular cyber breach, where they don’t have the issue of investments. A report says, Data exfiltration continues to increase. In 2020, more than 1,300 victims of ransomware had their data publicly leaked following an attack, as cybercriminals look to maximize the financial gain from successful incidents. During the first half of 2021, more than 1,100 data leaks have already been published – which projects a 70%

    ZTNA - an emerging technology

Unsurprisingly, organizations cited the evolving threat landscape as one of the top challenges in preventing ransomware attacks. As evidenced by ransomware surveys, there is a huge opportunity for the adoption of technology solutions like segmentation, SD-WAN, ZTNA, as well as SEG and EDR, to help protect against the threat of ransomware and the methods of access most commonly reported by respondents. The high amount of attacks demonstrates the urgency for organizations to ensure their security addresses the latest ransomware attack techniques across networks, endpoints, and clouds. The good news is that organizations are recognizing the value of a platform approach to ransomware defense.” “A recent report from FortiGuard Threat Landscape says ransomware grew 1070% year over year.

The survey reveals that most organizations are more concerned about ransomware than other cyberthreats. However, while the majority of organizations surveyed indicated they are prepared for a ransomware attack, including employee cyber training, risk assessment plans, and cybersecurity insurance, there was a clear gap in what many respondents viewed as essential technology solutions for protection and the technology that can best guard against the most commonly reported methods to gain entry to their networks. Based on the technologies viewed as essential, organizations were most concerned about remote workers and devices, with Secure Web Gateway, VPN and Network Access Control among the top choices. While ZTNA is an emerging technology, it should be considered a replacement for traditional VPN technology. Another surprise was secure email gateway at 33%, given phishing was reported as a common entry method of attackers. With this top concern of organizations regarding a ransomware attack was the risk of losing data, with the loss of productivity and the interruption of o

76% of Organizations Admit to Paying Ransomware Criminals with OneThird Still Unable to Recover Data

Businesses are losing the battle when it comes to defending against ransomware attacks, according to the Veeam 2022 Ransomware Trends Report, which found that 72% of organizations had partial or complete attacks on their backup repositories, dramatically impacting the ability to recover data without paying the ransom. Veeam found that 80% of successful attacks targeted known vulnerabilities — reinforcing the importance of patching and upgrading software. Almost all attackers attempted to destroy backup repositories to disable the victim’s ability to recover without paying the ransom. The report reveals the results of an independent research firm that surveyed 1,000 IT leaders whose organizations had been successfully attacked by ransomware at least once during the past 12 months, making it one of the largest reports of its kind. The first of its kind study examines the key learnings from these incidents, their impact on IT environments and the steps taken to implement Modern Data Protection strategies that ensure business continuity moving forward. The research project specifically surveyed four IT personas (CISOs, Security Professionals, Backup Administrators and IT Operations) to understand cyber-preparedness alignment across organizations. Ransomware has democratized data theft and requires a collaborative doubling down from organizations across every industry to maximize their ability to remediate and recover without paying the ransom. Experts say paying cybercriminals to restore data is not a data protection strategy. There is no guarantee of recovering data, the risks of reputational damage and loss of customer confidence are high, and most importantly, this feeds a self-fulfilling prophecy that rewards criminal activity.

The survey further says that, the majority (76%) of cyber-victims paid the ransom to end an attack and recover data. Unfortunately, while 52% paid the ransom and were able to recover data, 24% paid the ransom but were still not able

Out of various sectors, the #CheckPointresearch says, Education/Research was most attacked by overall cyberattacks in Q3, with an average of 2,148 attacks per organization every week, an increase of 18% compared to the third quarter of 2021.

Asia experienced the highest volume of #cyberattacks with 1778 weekly attacks per organization on average 28% increase in global cyberattacks compared to the same period in 2021. India saw 1,783 average attacks per organisation in Q3 2022, the same as last year

The new cyberattack data speaks on how the healthcare sector was the most targeted industry in terms of ransomware in the third quarter of 2022, with one in 42 organizations impacted by ransomware, a 5% increase YoY.

The Top Sectors Impacted by Ransomware are:

#Healthcare where 1 in 42 organizations impacted by ransomware with a 5% YoY increase

    # Internet Service Provider/Managed Service Provider where 1 in 43 organizations was impacted with a 25% YoY decrease

    # Finance/Banking where 1 out of every 49 organizations was affected by ransomware with a 17% increase in the past year.

    # Retail/Wholesale sector has seen the highest increase YoY of ransomware attacks, a 4.39% increase from the third quarter of 2021.

Experts say, Ransomware gangs continue to focus their efforts on targeting hospitals, largely because of intense pressure for these organizations to respond fast. A ransomware attack on a hospital can lead to potentially catastrophic consequences, such as delayed surgeries, hold ups in patient care and rescheduled doctor appointments.

Even if an attack doesn’t shut a hospital down, it can knock some or all digital systems offline, cutting doctors’ and nurses’ access to digital information like patient records and recommendations for care.

Going forward, Hospital organizations should keep their programs up-to-date, only download items from known sources, and constantly back-up the

The survey found that companies are challenged with more complex hybrid IT environments and are raising budgets to fend off #cyberattacks as well as keep up as production environments continue to diversify across various clouds. The result is that IT leaders feel they aren’t sufficiently protected.

A top priority of organizations this year is improving reliability and success of backups, followed by ensuring that Infrastructure as a Service and Software as a Service protection is equitable to the protection they rely on for datacenter-centric workloads.

Globally, organizations expect to increase their data protection budget in 2023 by 6.5%, which is notably higher than overall spending plans in other areas of IT. Of the 85% of organizations planning on increasing their data protection budgets, their average planned increase is 8.3% and often in concert with increased investments in #cybersecurity tools.

Cyberattacks caused the most impactful outages for organizations in 2020, 2021 and 2022, according to the report. 85% of organizations were attacked at least once in the past 12 months; up from 76% in last year’s report. Specifically, recovery is a main concern as organizations reported that only 55% of their encrypted/destroyed data was recoverable from attacks.

According to the survey, the single most important aspect that organizations are looking for in a Modern Data Protection solution is the “integration of data protection within a cyber preparedness strategy.

Secondly, due to its burden on budgets and manpower, ransomware and the current volatile cyber security landscape are taking priority for IT teams. This is causing IT resources and budgets originally allocated towards Digital Transformation initiatives to pivot to cyber prevention. Not only do cyberattacks drain operational budgets from ransoms to recovery efforts, but they also reduce organizations’ ability to modernize for their future success; instead, they

We have witnessed unique shifts in the world of cybercriminals, too. It is quite evident that, threat actors have had a productive year – learning new tactics and techniques, sharpening their tools, formulating new ways to victimise the already battered enterprises, organisations, and individuals globally. In the ransomware field, 2020 was the year of Ransomware 2.0. It was the most productive year for ransomware families who moved from hostaging data to exfiltrating data, coupled with blackmailing. We have discussed extensively about the founder of this tactic, Maze ransomware, and have since detected followers of this type of threat such as Ragnar Locker. There is re-emergence as the pandemic rages on last year --- REvil and JSWorm and Netfilim.

Hackers use special types of malware such as ransomware and spyware to steal data and lock compromised devices. Sometimes, hackers breach companies or government agencies’ databases to gain access to their data. They then demand extortion money for not revealing their trade secrets or other sensitive information in the public domain. Some hackers are programmers who write the code for various types of malware, including worms, trojans, viruses, scareware, and rootkits, etc. They can either use these malware programs or sell them to other cybercriminals. Some companies hire hackers to attack in multiple ways, including using brute force attacks, SQL injections, cross-site scripting and deploying DDoS attacks. This type of attack essentially overwhelms the organization’s web servers, making them unavailable for the customers. They may also choose to leak confidential customer data to ruin the rival’s reputation.
