Sharp Growth on Ransom DDoS attacks

There's been a significant rise in distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks accompanied by threats of extortion, with criminals demanding ransom payments in exchange for calling off an attack. Cybercriminals have been emboldened to attack as they find that more people and organizations go online without the necessary precautions and cyber defenses. DDoS attacks hit a record high in Q4 2021. Compared to Q3 2021, the total number of Distributed Denial of Service attacks in Q4 shows an increase of 52%. This is 4.5 times more than the same time last year. The DDoS threat landscape is constantly changing, reflecting the current economic and social trends. DDoS attacks pose problems for organisations when attackers flood servers and online infrastructure with requests for access, slowing down services or taking them fully offline, thus preventing legitimate users from accessing services at all – and cutting off business for the affected organisation. Cyber extortion comes in different forms. However, they are all bound by the common goal of threatening an individual or organization with disruption, inconvenience, or reputational damage unless a ransom is paid. From ransomware to the use of online scandal videos to extort celebrities or well-known personalities, the threat of cyber extortion should not be downplayed. It is important to be ready for them with the knowledge and prevention tools.

According to Cloudflare, just over one in five DDoS attacks was accompanied by a ransom note from the attacker during 2021. In December, a prime time for online retailers in the run up to Christmas, one in three of the organisations surveyed said they received a ransom letter relating to a DDoS attack. Targets on the receiving end of DDoS attacks can commonly include online retailers, online local governments, cloud-based business applications, streaming services and online games. Secondly, these cyberattacks are used for extortion. Instead of attacking a business .

Ransomware and DDoS attacks pose dangerous threats to patients having health issues

Increased digitization in healthcare is a contributor to the industry’s enlarged attack surface. And it is accelerated by a number of factors: the broad adoption of Electronic Health Records Systems (EHRS), integration of IoT technology in medical devices (software-based medical equipment like MRIs, EKGs, infusion pumps), and a migration to cloud services. A hospital room is equipped with an average of 15-20 devices connected to the internet in today's world of healthcare. The proliferation of medical and internet-connected devices in healthcare brings both clinical benefits and security risks. Indeed, the increasing use of medical IoT devices makes healthcare organizations more vulnerable to DDoS attacks; attackers use infected IoT devices in botnets to launch coordinated attacks. Since healthcare IT systems contain sensitive patient data, the sector has long been a target for hackers. Cybercriminals are drawn to healthcare networks because of widespread flaws that offer lucrative opportunities, which is why attacks are on the rise. Ransomware-as-a-service has become the norm in the cybercrime community in the healthcare industry this year.

“Globally, ransomware attacks have been one of the biggest threats to cybersecurity, particularly in the healthcare sector. As per Sophos’ The State of Ransomware in Healthcare 2021 report - 34% of healthcare organizations were hit by ransomware in the last year. Hospitals and health systems are, quite unfortunately, ripe for ransomware and other cyberattacks. Some of the factors most responsible for the rise in healthcare-targeted cyberattacks are due to the nature of the industry itself, like decentralized operations across hospitals and healthcare providers, and exponentially growing volumes of patient health information being captured and stored electronically (i.e. electronic health records) by health systems. Healthcare providers need to invest in technologies like EDR with human-led threat hunting, deploying

    Botnets leading to DDoS Attacks

There are millions of DDoS attacks from internet providers worldwide, including a wide range of regional providers, global transit and cloud companies. The distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack peaked at 26 million requests per second this past June. These massive botnet-induced attacks are targeting service providers. Carriers and cloud providers deployed billions of dollars of dedicated DDoS scrubber appliances and, for a time, gained the upper hand on the attackers.

These attacks are carried out to degrade or disable the performance and network communications of target systems. These targets can be small or large businesses, internet service providers, manufacturers, retailers, healthcare providers, schools and universities, or other nation-states. Essentially, any entity with an online presence can become a DDoS target.

The bots of a botnet can include computers, smartphones, virtualized machines, and/or a wide range of Internet of Things (IoT) devices such as IP cameras, smart TVs, routers, anything that has internet connectivity and can be compromised. In particular, IoT vulnerabilities and misconfigurations are extremely common in the consumer market making it very easy for hackers to create an IoT botnet.

The explosive growth in IoT and cloud computing paved the way for the rise of IoT botnets that amplifies DDoS attacks today. Combined with an increasingly lucrative extortion market, it represents a major shift in the DDoS threat landscape. This is a dangerous warning that the possibility of a sophisticated DDoS attack and a prolonged service outage will prevent businesses from growing.

IoT devices include a huge range of commercial and consumer devices such as temperature measurement systems, smart TVs, IP cameras, smart door bells, security systems, network routers & switches, and even children’s toys.

Despite a huge amount of commentary and warnings about IoT vulnerabilities and well-understood fixes

    Malicious DDoS Attacks Climb 203%

The first six months of 2022 were marked by a significant increase in DDoS activity across the globe. Attacks ranged from cases of hacktivism to terabit attacks in Asia and the United States. The number of malicious DDoS attacks climbed 203% compared to the first six months of 2021. There were 60% more malicious DDoS events during the first six months of 2022 than during the entire year of 2021.

In May 2022, Radware mitigated a volumetric carpet-bombing attack, which represented a total volume of 2.9 PB. The attack lasted 36 hours, peaking at 1.5 Tbps with a sustained attack rate of more than 700 Gbps for more than eight hours. The combination of duration, volume, and average/sustained attack rates makes this one of the most significant #DDoSattacks on record.

During the first six months of 2022, Radware observed an increase in malicious transactions targeting online applications, dominated by predictable resource location and injection attacks. The number of malicious web application transactions grew by 38%, compared to the first six months of 2021, surpassing the total number of malicious transactions recorded in 2020.

Predictable resource location attacks accounted for almost half (48%) of all attacks followed by code injection (17%) and SQL injection (10%). The most attacked industries were retail and wholesale trade (27%) and high tech (26%). Carriers and SaaS providers ranked third and fourth, shouldering 14% and 7% of the attacks respectively.

Major information and communication networks in the Philippines, including CNN, news network ABS-CBN, Rappler, and VERA Files, were the target of DDoS attacks in connection with the country’s 2022 general elections.

No organization in the world is safe from cyber retaliation at this time. Online vigilantes and hacktivists could disrupt wider security efforts driven by nations and authorities. New legions of actors could introduce extreme unpredictability for intelligence s

The #cybersecurity world is in turmoil. A new generation of HTTPS DDoS attacks are disrupting the market, bypassing organizations’ DDoS protection and WAF solutions.

A #WebDDoS Tsunami attack is an evolved type of HTTP DDoS Flood cyberattack that is sophisticated, aggressive and very difficult to detect and mitigate without blocking legitimate traffic.

Web DDoS Tsunami attacks were developed during the new era of hacktivist activity sparked by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022. Attack tactics began with high-volume network-based Flood attacks. Later, they evolved to more sophisticated multi-vector application-level attacks that are hard to detect and mitigate.
