To millions of men, Sylvia Kristel will forever be the girl who inspired their first boyhood fantasies.
The film actress caused a global sensation in 1974 with the title role in Emmanuelle, about a promiscuous housewife.
It was one of mainstream cinema’s first erotic movies.
But today – 38 years and countless dreams later – many of the 650million fans who have seen it were in mourning after its glamorous star died, aged 60.
The Dutch actress had survived cocaine addiction, alcoholism, throat cancer, a stroke and also a string of doomed love affairs.
She owned homes in glitzy locations across the world – but lost them all after going broke.
The screen legend ended her days in a small flat above a cafe in Utrecht, Holland.
“Sylvia died in her sleep on Wednesday night,” agent Marieke Verharen said today.
And the film’s director Just Jaeckin said: “I am very sad. She was like a little sister.”
Emmanuelle caused huge controversy on release. It was initially banned in Paris and was heavily cut in Britain before eventually being given an X-certificate.

Sylvia Kristel, a Dutch actress who became an international sex star after she played the title role in the 1974 erotic film “Emmanuelle,” died on Wednesday in the Netherlands. She was 60.
The cause was cancer, her agency, Features Creative Management said in a statement on its Web site, without saying where she died. AVN, a trade publication for the sex film industry, reported that she died at home in The Hague.
Ms. Kristel was a willowy, dark-haired model and beauty contest winner in her early 20s with scant acting experience when she was cast by the French director Just Jaeckin as Emmanuelle, the wife of a French diplomat in Bangkok who seeks solace for her boredom in a variety of sexual encounters.
With its simulated sex scenes shot largely in soft focus, an exotic locale and a sentimental pop score, the film became an avatar of soft-core pornography. An immediate hit in France — it stayed at the same theater in Paris for several years — and later in Japan, where it was perceived as a triumph of feminism (mostly, Ms. Kristel pointed out, for one scene in which Emmanuelle climbs on top of her husband during sex), it was distributed in the United States by a major studio, Columbia Pictures, a relatively respectable alternative to the scandalous hits of two years earlier, “Deep Throat” and “Behind the Green Door.”
Ms. Kristel went on to appear in several Emmanuelle feature films and made-for-television movies.

Actress Sylvia Kristel, the Dutch star of the hit 1970s erotic movie 'Emmanuelle,' has died of cancer in the Netherlands. She was 60.
Kristel died in her sleep Wednesday night, according to a statement from her agent, Features Creative Management.
Her breakthrough came in 'Emmanuelle,' a 1974 erotic tale directed by Frenchman Just Jaeckin, about the sexual adventures of a man and his beautiful young wife, played by Kristel.
She went on to star in several sequels to 'Emmanuelle,' as well as in Hollywood movies including 'The Concorde: Airport '79,' 'The Fifth Musketeer' (both 1979) and 'Private Lessons' (1981).
Kristel appeared in more than 50 films, many erotically tinted, including a 1981 adaptation — also directed by Jaeckin — of D.H. Lawrence's novel 'Lady Chatterley's Lover.'
She was honored in 2006 with a special jury prize at the Tribeca Film Festival for a short animated film she directed called 'Topor et Moi.'
Kristel told the Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant in 2005 that her former partner, Belgian author Hugo Claus, had persuaded her to star in 'Emmanuelle,' which was set in Thailand.

At the time, Sylvia Kristel was worried about starring in the 1974 erotic movie 'Emmanuelle,' but consoled herself with the thought that few people would see her sexually charged performance.
That turned out to be wrong.
'I thought, 'oh my goodness, this is not easy stuff,'' the Dutch actress once said in an interview. 'I was nervous but then my boyfriend said, 'Who's going to watch this film? It will never pass censorship.''
It did pass the censors and went on to become a classic of the sexually liberated 1970s, propelling Kristel to international stardom.
Kristel died of cancer in her sleep Wednesday at age 60, her management company announced Thursday. She had been fighting cancer for several years.
Kristel told the Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant in 2005 that her former partner, Belgian author Hugo Claus, had persuaded her to star in 'Emmanuelle.' The erotic tale directed by Frenchman Just Jaeckin examined the sexual adventures of a man and his beautiful young wife in Thailand.
'He said, 'Thailand, that's nice, we've never been there and anyway the film will never come out in the Netherlands so you won't put your mother to shame,'' Kristel said. 'In the end, 350 million people saw it worldwide.'
