മരപല്ലികളുടെ രണ്ട്പുതിയ സ്പീഷീസുകളെ കേരളത്തിലെ പശ്ചിമഘട്ട മലനിരകളില്‍ നിന്നും കണ്ടെത്തി.അഗസ്ത്യമല മരപ്പല്ലി, ആനമുടി മരപ്പല്ലി എന്നീ രണ്ട് ഇനങ്ങളെയാണ് കണ്ടെത്തിയത്.ചെന്തുരുണി വന്യജീവി സങ്കേതത്തിലെ നാലായിരത്തിലേറെ അടി ഉയരമുള്ള പാണ്ടി മൊട്ടയിലെ ചോലക്കാടുകളില്‍ നിന്നാണ് അഗസ്ത്യമല മരപ്പല്ലിയെ കണ്ടെത്തിയത്. വലിയ വലുപ്പമുള്ള ഈ മരപ്പല്ലികളുടെ കഴുത്തിലെ നെക്ക്ലൈസ് പോലുള്ള തൂവെള്ള നിറത്തിലുള്ള പൊട്ടുകളാണ് ഇവയുടെ പ്രത്യേകത. മറ്റൊരിനമായ ആനമുടി മരപ്പല്ലിയെ മൂന്നാറിനടുത്തുള്ള ആനമുടി റിസര്‍വ് വനത്തിലെ പെട്ടിമുടിക്കടുത്തുള്ള ചോലക്കാട്ടില്‍ നിന്നാണ് കണ്ടെത്തിയത്. വലുപ്പമേറിയ ഈ ഇനം നമ്മുടെ മരപ്പല്ലികളില്‍ ഏറ്റവും വലുതാണ്. ഒരുപക്ഷെ നമ്മുടെ മരപ്പല്ലികളില്‍ ഏറ്റവുമധികം ഉയരത്തില്‍ (ആറായിരം അടി ഉയരത്തില്‍) വസിക്കുന്ന ഇനവും ആനമുടി മരപ്പല്ലി തന്നെയായിരിക്കും. തടിച്ചുരുണ്ടിരിക്കുന്ന ഈ പല്ലികള്‍ക്ക് മഞ്ഞകലര്‍ന്ന തവിട്ടുനിറവും കണ്‍വലയങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് ചുവപ്പ് നിറവുമാണ്.
അന്താരാഷ്ട്ര ജേണലായ സൂടാക്സയുടെ ഏറ്റവും പുതിയ ലക്കത്തിലാണ് പുതിയ കണ്ടുപിടുത്തം റിപ്പോര്‍ട്ട് ചെയ്തിട്ടുള്ളത്.തിരുവനന്തപുരത്തെ ഇന്ത്യന്‍ ഇന്‍സ്റ്റിറ്റ്യൂട്ട് ഓഫ് സയന്‍സ് എഡുക്കേഷന്‍ ആന്റ് റിസര്‍ച്ചിലെ ഉരഗ ഗവേഷകനായ വിവേക് ഫിലിപ്പ് സിറിയക് ബാംഗ്ലൂരിലെ നാഷണല്‍ സെന്റര്‍ ഫോര്‍ ബയോളജിക്കല്‍ സയന്‍സിലെ അലക്സ് ജോണി, സുവേളജിക്കല്‍ സര്‍വേയിലെ ശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞനായ ഡോ. മുഹമ്മദ് ജാഫര്‍ പാലോട്ട്, വയനാട് വൈല്‍ഡിലെ നാച്വറലിസ്റ്റ് ആയ ഉമേഷ് പാവുകണ്ടി എന്നിവരുടെ പഠനസംഘമാണ് കണ്ടെത്തലിനു പിന്നില്‍ പ്രവര്‍ത്തിച്ചത്.ഇതോടുകൂടി കേരളത്തിലെ മരപ്പല്ലികളുടെ വൈവിധ്യം 13 ആയും പശ്ചിമഘട്ടത്തിലേത് 19 ആയും ഉയര്‍ന്നു. കേരളത്തിലെ ഉരഗജീവി സമ്പത്ത് 177 ഉം ആയിട്ടുണ്ട്.

വിഴിഞ്ഞം തുറമുഖത്തിനടക്കം വൻകിട പദ്ധതികൾക്കായി കൂടുതൽ ക്വാറികൾ തുറക്കാൻ നീക്കം തുടങ്ങി.പത്തനംതിട്ടയിലെ കോന്നിയിലാണ് ഏറ്റവും കൂടുതല്‍ ക്വാറികള്‍ പ്രവര്‍ത്തിക്കുന്ന സ്ഥലങ്ങളിലൊന്ന്. വനങ്ങൾ അതിരുന്ന ഇവിടെ എണ്ണിയാലൊടുങ്ങാത്ത പാറമടകൾ പ്രവര്‍ത്തിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. കലഞ്ഞൂർ പഞ്ചായത്തിൽ മാത്രം അഞ്ച് ക്വാറികളും ഒൻപത് ക്രഷർ യൂണിറ്റുകളുമാണ് ഒരേസമയം പ്രവര്‍ത്തിക്കുന്നത്.പാറമടകൾ കൊണ്ട് പൊറുതിമുട്ടിയ നിരവധി ഗ്രാമങ്ങളുണ്ട് പശ്ചിമഘട്ടത്തിൽ. അതിലൊന്നാണ് കോന്നിക്കടുത്തുളള മാങ്കോട്. ആറടി മാത്രം വീതിയുളള റോഡിലൂടെ ടൺ കണക്കിന് കരിങ്കല്ലാണ് മലയിറങ്ങിപ്പോകുന്നത്. സാധാരണ ടിപ്പർ ലോറിയിൽ ആറു ടണ്ണോളം കരിങ്കല്ലാണ് കയറ്റാൻ അനുമതിയുളളത്. എന്നാൽ കൊണ്ടുപോകുന്നത് അതിന്‍റെ ഇരട്ടിയിലധികം.
പശ്ചിമഘട്ടത്തിലെ അതീവ പരിസ്ഥിതി ലോല മേഖലകളിൽ ഖനനം പാടില്ലെന്നായിരുന്നു ഗാഡ്ഗിൽ കമ്മിറ്റി ശുപാർശ.ഭൂമി കുലുക്കവും, മണ്ണിടിച്ചിലും ഉരുൾ പൊട്ടലിലുമുണ്ടാകുമെന്നും വനങ്ങൾ വരണ്ട്, ഉറവ വറ്റിപ്പോകുമെന്നും ശുപാര്‍ശയില്‍ വിശദമാക്കിയിരുന്നു. പ്രളയത്തിനുശേഷം നവകേരള നിർമിതിക്കൊരുങ്ങുന്ന സർക്കാര്‍ പാരിസ്ഥിതികകാര്യങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് മുന്‍തൂക്കം നല്‍കിയായിരിക്കും പുതുകേരള നിര്‍മ്മിതിക്കുള്ള പദ്ധതികള്‍ തയ്യാറാക്കുകയെന്ന് വ്യക്തമാക്കിയിരുന്നു. എന്നാല്‍ പ്രളയത്തെ തുടര്‍ന്ന് പ്രവര്‍ത്തനം നിര്‍ത്തിയ പാറമടകളെല്ലാം തന്നെ വീണ്ടും തുറക്കാന്‍ ആരംഭിച്ചത് ഏറെ ആശങ്കയാണ് ഉയര്‍‌ത്തുന്നത്.
