In a bid to plug loopholes in the implementation of welfare schemes, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi launched the nationwide Aadhaar Enabled Service Delivery from Dudu in Rajasthan, marking the second anniversary of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). While addressing the function, Congress President and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi said the Aadhaar scheme gives identity to the common man and is a tool to claim benefits. The Unique ID project is about to begin a new phase - that of facilitating transactions. Aadhaar-enabled applications will be used for ensuring direct payments to the correct beneficiary.
“The concept behind Aadhaar is very simple and transparent – to ensure identity to everyone. But, Aadhaar is not just a simple identification card. People also can use this card to avail benefits of the welfare schemes. It will help the marginalized sections of our society to ensure their rights. These cards also help the government to ensure that the subsidies and other allowances reach the correct beneficiary†said Sonia Gandhi. “Government has never been reluctant to provide subsidy to the poor. But it is facing difficulty to make sure that those benefits reach the correct persons. The Aadhaar card will help the government in ensuring that subsidy reaches its intended beneficiaries directly and the poor will not have to run from pillar to post to claim their rightsâ€.
“We had launched this project with great expectations and we are happy that we experience its benefits today. I am sure that the government will continue the dedicated and determined efforts to make this programme a big success, learning from the past mistakes and shortcomings†added Sonia Gandhi.

“As you all know we have no control on the international prices of oil which have gone up from 40 dollars per barrels 10 years ago, to 140 dollars per barrel today. You know that we import 80% of crude oil from which we make petrol, diesel, kerosene and cooking gas. We continue to subsidise kerosene which must be done. But we have been compelled and we have no option but to increase the prices of diesel and the cooking gas. In spite of these, UPA government is doing its best not to burden the people with more hardships. As we hold the responsibility as a Government at the Centre, the state government also has some responsibility. I want to ask the BJP government here why have not the government increase the limit of LPG cylinders to a family from 6 to 9. This is what our Congress government has done in the states ruled by us. Why has the Karnataka Government not reduced the VAT on diesel, just like our Congress led governments have done? So it is very easy to criticize others but what about you (the state government), what are you doing to reduce the hardships of your people? It is your (state government’s) responsibility as much as ours†said Sonia Gandhi.
