Story of thousands of women who were never supported by their in-laws, nor by the own family. Women who and no access to money, and always lived in ignorance within the four walls of their home. Women who never had any identity.
Then one day, their lives changed. The Congress led-UPA launched Rajiv Gandhi Mahila Vikas Pariyojna which enabled its 92,883 Women Self Help Groups to avail loans worth INR 2.61 Billion from various banks.
Women who got associated with this scheme found themselves financially independent. It helped them to come out of the four walls of their homes and earn a living.

Millions of women thank Rahul Gandhi and Congress for launching Self Help Groups (SHG) across India. An SHG is a village-based financial intermediary usually composed of 10--20 local women.Members make small regular savings contributions over a few months until there is enough capital in the group to begin lending. Funds may then be lent back to the members or to others in the village for any purpose.
It is because of SHG's that women in rural India are able to get out of debt from money lenders and are able to sucessfully generate self employment for themselves.
30 million women have been empowered and have found a new identity for themselves in the society with the scheme. Indian National Congress further plans to reach out to more than 70 million women in the next 5 years. And will bring more such schemes that will benefit each and every section of the society.
